Star Trek Phase II: Blood And Fire

As far as Star Trek fan projects go, Star Trek: Phase II is the "best," in that it has by far the best sets, special effects, and actual cameos by actors from Star Trek. However, despite having special effects a million times better than the show it homages, every episode has been a train wreck of bad writing, bad acting, and a ridiculous cutesy nature that pervaded all of Star Trek for the past decade or so. That said, the latest episode, "Blood And Fire," is actually pretty good. It's still stiff, but it accurately captures the feel of the original series. The plot is something about a disease and stranded ship, but meanwhile Kirk's nephew and his boyfriend decide to get married but it's the 23rd century so that's ok. Check this out, but avoid the other episodes in my opinion unless you want to see Sulu and Chekov played by George Takei and Walter Koenig. Fan films have certainly come a long way since I was doing stop motion animation with Legos in my basement.

RATING: 68%

I prefer Gene Rodenberry's Andromeda. And Xena: Warrior Princess.

Hi Glenn. Forgot to mention I found this site through your post on the Trek forum. While I agree that some of the acting (stress on some) might be a little stiff, for the most part these New Voyages/Phase II fan films have been wonderful. I might even say needed. There are a lot of mysteries about how Trek made it from the series to TMP, and they're doing great filling it in. All the nods to continuity are wonderful! We've heard of Regulan blood worms, but finally we get to see them. And calling back to episodes such as The Deadly Years and The City on the Edge of Forever, showing us an earlier version of the Miranda class starship, putting in those nods to the show Enterprise, and explaining how the USS Enterprise got such a massive refit really helps tie the whole Trek saga together. I think it's amazing what they're doing, and I for one am going to keep watching.
