Doom Patrol Vol. 5: Magic Bus

Oh, Grant Morrison, you so crazy! Mr. Nobody of the Brotherhood of Dada runs for president, so Robotman stomps around like a big crankypuss. Meanwhile, Dorothy, the ape-faced little girl he lives with on Danny The Street, a sentient city block, starts having terrifying hallucinations. I don't think you could call the Doom Patrol "heroes" at this point in Morrison's storyline, but you also probably couldn't call it a "story" by any stretch of the word either.

Crank: High Voltage

I never even expected that this would be the kind of movie I'd see in the first place, much less that I'd think of it as the best movie of 2009 (so far). This is a sequel that picks up I guess after Chev Chelios falls 2000 feet from a helicopter to his death at the end of Crank 1, except then he is brought back withan artificial heart and has to electrocute himself every five minutes or so to stay alive while he chases down his own heart, which has been stolen by Chinese gangsters. Jason Statham certainly brings a lot of charm to this ridiculous affair, and the movie plays like a cross between a music video, a fever dream, and a sketch comedy show. There's something to be said about American culture within this convoluted mess of a movie that somehow, despite the hundred disparate directions it's pulling itself, ends up as the perfect brainless film, but I wouldn't know what it was.

M&M's Characters

While we're talking about corporate mascots here, I've always been a little creeped out by the M&M's people. It's not that they talk or have faces that I have a problem with. It's those flesh colored arms that imply human beings are just dressed up as candies that bugs me. I don't want chocolate covered meat in a candy shell, thank you very much. Unless that's a euphemism in which case I'll take seven.

Doom Patrol: The Painting That Ate Paris

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Grant Morrison is a great writer/psychopath. A good idea for comic book companies is to let Grant Morrison write comics, because he comes up with some great shit, but to never ever let him anywhere near mainstream continuity (Final Crisis). Doom Patrol is Morrison's playground, and probably the best place he could showcase his talents. In this volume, the Doom Patrol, a bizarre set of reject heroes, goes up against the Brotherhood Of Dada, who have obtained a painting capable of swallowing cities. Richard Case gets a great chance to demonstrate his artistic prowess as our heroes navigate the painting's various art movements, and later gets to make up all kinds of bizarre creatures when AntiGod is destroying the world. It's a lot of fun and probably the weirdest book to ever feature a love tryst between a giant superintelligent French gorilla and a disembodied brain.

Google Zoology

You can find anything with Google. Crabbit? Check. Donkeysaurus? You betcha. How do people come up with this stuff?

RATING: 50% donkey, 50% dinosaur

50% crab, 50% rabbit
(I can't even remember where I found these. Maybe I'll retro-google them when I'm feeling spry.)
