O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Remember when this movie came out and everybody you knew loved it and played the soundtrack incessantly, and while you yourself thought it was pretty good too you only felt the need to see it once and were just a little disappointed that it wasn't The Big Lebowski, and also annoyed with all the hype because you were too cool for school? Me too. Well friend, you can stop the hate because in my opinion this movie is still pretty fun and enjoyable almost a decade later. Sure, the movie might suffer from a minor case of Magical Negro syndrome, but the music is great and George Clooney's character is so charming that it's easy to forgive the movie's minor sins. Then the Coen Brothers made The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty, and The Ladykillers, oops.

Burn After Reading

When I left the movie theater last night I thought I had liked this movie, but it turns out my brain was just playing a trick on me, and I really didn't like it. It wasn't as bad as Ladykillers or Intolerable Cruelty, but it felt a lot like those movies. Basically the plot is some spy stuff that isn't worth summarizing, then Brad Pitt and Frances McDormand do some funny things while George Clooney has a beard. Somebody compared this movie to Big Lebowski, and that is accurate in that it is some story committed to celluloid performed by some people while music happens. In conclusion lame unless you are the guy in the back of the theater who was laughing hysterically at everything really loud.

No Country For Old Men

#92 on Glenn's Top 100 Movie List

(I should say that until we get to the top 10, the movies aren't in order, because that would just take a million years to rank them).

I didn't want to put too many recent movies on this list, because I've always been a proponent of waiting a while to let a movie's impact sink in, but this one is amazing. It's a great sort of chase movie for most of it, but if it wasn't for a moment 90% in which the narrative totally shifts and it leaves typical movie territory, then it wouldn't be as great as it is. I took out United 93 from my old myspace version of this list, because even though that movie is extremely well made, I can't picture myself ever watching it again for the rest of my life.
