Harold Bloom

This review isn't about Harold Bloom. It's about Harold Bloom's Ratemyprofessor page. I hope it makes many of you feel nice and tingly inside to know that the difference between you and Yalies like me and Lollies is twofold: (1) The ability to spell; (2) A massive, literally incredible sense of entitlement.

Winning 1st Place

So I guess winning 1st place is pretty nice after all. Some things are easy to win (like a spelling bee against a baby) and others are really difficult (like trivia at the Harp). I think 1st place is better than 2nd because "they" (by that I mean the No Fear! t-shirts) say 2nd is just the first loser, and it's better than 3rd because that's like saying "nice try, but better luck next time...loser". Imagine you're that Serbian swimmer who almost beat Michael Phelps, but not really. No one even remembers that guy now. Like I said I'm not a fan of gold, but when gold looks green and it's worth $220 USD then you don't really give a damn what it's made out of.

PS - I'd like to add that it's important to be a good sport, but obviously some of us have real "intellectual" egos.

Winning 3rd Place

Winning 3rd place can feel great. At least you won something. But it's obviously not as great to the rest of society as winning 2nd or 1st place. In the Olympics 3rd place will win you a medal made of copper and tin and that's not too bad, because although it's highly unfashionable it's better than nothing. But 2nd place means you win a medal made of silver and that seems like a pretty large gap in quality for just scoring .5 points less than the team ahead of you. I think 1st place kind of sucks because I don't look good in gold (unless it's white gold, but then again that's really just like silver so save your money) and it's a pretty soft metal anyway so you'd probably scratch it. If you win 3rd place at least you're not trying to show off, especially if your team has only played one game of trivia together. Of course, none of this is relevant if winning 3rd place gets you a pint glass and bottle opener/keychain, but at least you've got your pride.
