The Curse of the Cat People

Amy is a dreamer. An imaginative, head in the clouds, daydreamer. Her father, on the other hand, wants nothing more than for Amy to get her head on straight and be a “normal” girl. After trying and failing to make friends with the neighborhood kids, Amy wishes for a friend of her own. And then she meets Irena. No one else can see Irena, only Amy. But Irena isn’t your typical imaginary friend. Irena just so happens to look and sound just like her father’s first wife, who died, tragically, before Amy was born. Is Amy’s new friend just an imaginary playmate or has Irena’s spirit returned from the dead to impart the curse of the cat people? While it is, technically, a sequel to Cat People, The Curse of the Cat People features no actual cat people. Curse takes a couple of characters from the original film and puts them into an entirely different kind of movie. While Cat People was a movie dripping with style and suspense, Curse puts more effort into being a strange fairytale. Even with all the horror elements floating around the film, like a character who may or may not be a ghost, an old dark house and a woman who wants to kill Amy out of jealousy, The Curse of the Cat People leans pretty hard on magical realism.
