A group of friends cause a traffic accident which leaves a man dead. They form a pact to cover up the incident and never speak about it again. One year later, someone starts sending members of the group threatening messages. Sound familiar? It almost sounds like a remake of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. But it’s not a remake of 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer because it features characters from 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. And it’s the reliance on the characters from 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer that most brings down 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. Well, that and the running time. And the multiple unnecessary endings. And the misandry. And the unlikable characters…

I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer

A group of inconsiderate teens stage a big prank at their town's annual Fourth of July Carnival, faking an attack by the North Carolina Fisherman killer. But something goes wrong and one of the participants dies. The surviving teens decide to keep their involvement in the stunt a secret. One year later, they begin to receive threatening notes from someone who knows the truth about what they did the previous summer. I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer is textbook 2000s horror: muted colors, shaky cam, jittery editing, nu metal soundtrack, the whole nine yards. There isn't anything in the movie that ties it back to the previous Last Summer films, other than the use of the Fisherman killer. The basic structure of the movie works but none of the characters are particularly likeable and the reveal of the killer's identity at the end of the movie is pretty dumb.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

The original I Know What You Did Last Summer was a straightforward, some might say formulaic, whodunnit slasher. It was well cast, well shot and it arrived at a time when audiences were hungry for throwback slashers. The sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, arrived in theatres some thirteen months later and bombed pretty badly. It's not hard to see why. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer is very contrived. The original film didn't leave a lot of room for potential sequels, so the movie has to jump through a few hoops in order to establish its premise. The sequel also goes a little overboard with the number of dream sequences and fakeouts, which really slows things down during the first two acts. The mostly new cast handle themselves fairly well, especially Brandy, Jack Black and Jeffrey Combs. But even though I Still Know What You Did Last Summer isn't exactly reinventing the wheel, it's not a slog. It looks good and it borrows elements from some great old school slashers.

I Know What You Did Last Summer

After hitting a man with their car, a group of friends reluctantly agree to dispose of the body and cover up the accident. A year later, they begin to receive threatening letters about the incident. Was there a witness to their crime or has one of the friends decided to turn on the others? If Scream is a postmodern take on the slasher formula, then I Know What You Did Last Summer is pure, unadulterated formula. It's a slow burn whodunnit loaded with red herrings, in the tradition of countless early slasher films. It's well made, with plenty of beautiful tracking shots. It's bloody, but not gory. It's also 90s as hell. The opening track is by Type O Negative, for God's sake.
