aka Summer of Fear
After her parents are killed in a car accident, Julia goes to live with her Aunt and Uncle in California. At first, her cousin Rachel tries to be supportive. Showing Julia around town, helping her shop for new clothes, trying to break Julia out of her shell. But, before too long, Julia starts to overshadow Rachel. She takes over Rachel’s room, steals Rachel’s boyfriend, has Rachel’s horse sent away, and everyone starts to accuse Rachel of being jealous of Julia. But after breaking out in mysterious hives the night before the big dance, Rachel starts to suspect that something far more sinister is going on: her cousin is a witch. Directed by Wes Craven, Stranger in Our House puts a supernatural twist on the mysterious stranger/family usurper trope. It’s a slow burn that definitely could have benefited from a better score. It’s almost more of a melodrama than a horror movie and might have been a better movie overall if it turned out that Julia was never actually a witch in the first place.
