A black guy (well, I mean a guy who just so happens to be black) goes with his girlfriend to meet her white family (well, I mean her family that just so happens to be white) and things end up getting a little creepy. You know, body snatchers style not to get too spoilery.

School Daze

Spike Lee's second movie is some bizarre piece of auteurism masked as a college sex comedy set at an HBCU. It's got all the expected weird and wacky characters who get into college hijinx, but then there's a Broadway-style musical number in the middle, racial tension between light and dark skinned girls, and a strange tonal turn in the last five minutes where a girl (basically) gets raped and there's all these nonsensical angles and Laurence Fishburne yelling at the camera. I don't hesitate to call Spike Lee one of the three or four genius directors alive, but often, like Tarantino or PT Anderson he'll just make a movie that so abrasively bucks audience expectations that it's difficult to know what to make of it as a film. Also, I'm glad he stopped putting himself in his own movies because he is NOT A GOOD ACTOR.

My Black Boyfriend

I really want to tell you about my boyfriend! And not just because he's black (which he is). Actually, he never told me he was black, but the people he works for have been telling him he's black for years. His boss at Kroger wanted to put him on the Management Track because he was such a smart young black man. At his new job he's black too, which is kind of a relief because I'd gotten used to his being black and if I found out he wasn't, I would have to reassess the whole relationship. Having a black boyfriend has taught me so much about other peoples' cultures' histories. I think I understand my boyfriend's blackness very well because I am a woman, and once upon a time in history, neither one of us would have been able to vote. Well, he would have been allowed to vote like 55 years before me, so I'd say females are just a little bit more oppressed (not that it's a contest or anything!). And now the president is black, and the almost-president was a woman, so look at how far we've come, Abraham Lincoln.
