Overheard at Anti-Obama demonstration:
"Nine-eleven was our borning!"
"Abortion is white slavery!"
At first I thought that maybe these champions of the free market were so busy boning up on their Austrian economics that they missed a spelling test or two, but then I just gave up. I kinda hope that Obama does outlaw freedom, and that his first big education reform involves a mandatory IQ test hooked up to an electric chair. Or at the very least a law that says Americans have to feed their kids something other than paint chips and gravy.

I sort of think these people should be interned.
AMOUNT I AM JOKING: 30%
Soooooo, R3 finally shows its true colors! Thank you, loco, for proving what I've known all along: R3 is run by Communists, Obama worshippers, bisexual academics with pinky rings and ANTIAMERICANS! GO BACK TO RUSSIA AND/OR CUBA! I FOR ONE WILL NOT STAND IDLY BY AND WATCH THIS COUNTRY TURN INTO SOME KIND OF WEIRD, ANTI-DEMOCRATIC FORM OF GOVERNMENT I THINK I LEARNED ABOUT ONCE IN SCHOOL BUT CANNOT REMEMBER RIGHT NOW!
It's not gay if you fuck guys. It's only gay if you like them.
If I don't have a pinky ring can I still be a bisexual academic?
Also, I prefer cheese curds on my paint chips and gravy. It almost tastes like poutine.
I too want a pinky ring.
I like when they use the terms fascism/communism/nazism/blackpeopleism/socialism all interchangeably. I guess they are all exactly the same if you don't know anything about any of them. Fun!
It's true, but capitalism and Naziism are just as often connected in "right wing" caricatures by people who don't understand them either. District 9 went far out of its way to link multinational corporations with fascism (and Satan).
I'd bet at least 20% of the people marching around calling Obama a Nazi are holocaust deniers.
What a funny old world we live in.
I feel like there's the potential for actual, intelligent, beneficial debate on the topic of health care reform, but people just want to scream instead. Is reason in America dead? Or is it too much to assume that it ever really existed here to begin with?
I'm pretty sure it's related to our shitty education system.
I've been thinking about this for a while. I could be wrong, but here goes:
Even many well-educated Americans find formal courtesy pretentious and insincere, and generalized intellectual cultivation (vs. work ethic, job training, reading to get ahead in one's field, etc.) to be a kind of vain, frivolous bookishness, a boring waste of time.
Consequently, many Americans are very genial and friendly when they're happy and they agree with you, but they don't know how to not be rude or sullen when they aren't and they don't. They're brilliant when it comes to things that they're interested in, and tend to be ignorant and dismissive of things that they think are boring, hard or not immediately profitable. Nice people, on the whole, but not well equipped for the chore of rational debate, where you have to sit quietly and not get mad or change the subject while someone else talks about stuff that you disagree with and don't fully understand.
Plus Americans work the longest hours and have the shortest vacations of any industrialized Western nation. Who wants to spend their weekends talking about hard, boring things, being polite and making compromises? Who has time to think?
I wanted to weigh in on my continued bafflement over the current social/political/cultural climate in America but it makes my head hurt. I get all my American news from The Daily Show because I like my smadness (smadness = sadness + madness) with a joke. But lately, watching John Stewart interview people who are convinced that democrats want to murder the elderly, he looks like he's on the verge of tears. People used to joke that the Daily Show would be irrelevant with a democrat in the white house, but I'm convinced that John Stewart is probably the only American on television who isn't out of his or her fucking mind.
The politics of the United States have always been contentious and divisive. Do some of that reading you were speaking of into the man “who would have rather been right than President!,”--Henry Clay—Lincoln and Kennedy both thought he was one of the greatest Senators of all time. If today's morons in Congress and the Senate had to deal with him and the likes of John C. Calhoun and President Andrew Jackson at the same time the U.S. would be much stronger for it. I also think that dueling should come back into vogue—It would really give gravitas to the combatants and their personal stances on important issues.
Also, take a gander at the miniseries, “John Adams.” I doubt you would want to have your child grow up to be President afterwards.
Am I the only one not bothered by these knuckleheads? I recall the left hanging on every malapropism W. blathered and calling him a traitor.
Actually, the only bothersome issue (and this isn't new) is that many of the people protesting would probably benefit from a public option. It would make sense if the ones holding picket signs were wearing diamond cufflinks. But, alas, American politics has always been about persuading the great unwashed to vote against their best interests. And the GOP has, since Goldwater, been absolutely dynamite at it. How do you get a sawmill worker to hate tax increases on the wealthy? You either a) appeal to his/her desire to one day be wealthy (that is, they better vote against tax hikes, you know, in case they win the lottery) or, b) tell them that if the gov't increases taxes, their employer will have no choice--they will have to force massive layoffs. No choice, pal! The government made me do it!
Take this woman in Alabama, for instance:
Frankowski has been hit hard by the economic turmoil of the past year...She would like to share a house with her soon-to-be husband, but first she must figure out how to get free of the house she has - the one with the underwater mortgage. Some left-leaning writers argue that people in her boat must be deluded to oppose Barack Obama, but Frankowski is skeptical that her interests are being served...So she said, "I've paid my mortgage every month. And I'm getting no help. I'm just saying, Let capitalism work." Then she added, "We just want people to listen to us and care."
