Led Zeppelin III

The Immigrant Song is one of the best opening tracks in all of recorded history. Too bad that means it's all downhill. I appreciate the folksy experimenting on the album, but I skip a lot of the tracks after about thirty seconds. According to Wikipedia I am totally wrong.

RATING: 51%

Hello? Tangerine? Hello, anyone in there?

Look, a 51% is above average. I don't hate it, like I said.

I must agree with Laurie. Tangerine is great. You should also give Since I've Been Loving You or Gallows Pole a try--some great 70s blues-rock. And when I say 70s blues-rock, I don't mean George Thorogood 70s blues-rock. I mean GOOD 70s blues-rock. Anyway, give them a listen.

I've listened to the album. I just don't like it more than 51%.

I agree with you for the most part, Glenn. Though I would say that Since I've Been Loving You is a hugely overlooked Zep song- it's amazingly good. LZ3 is largely overshadowed by LZ4 (I mean, When The Levee Breaks is phenomenal), but I actually think III is better than II.

Glenn,

I wasn't suggesting you overlooked the whole album, but you did mention that you "skip a lot of the tracks after about thirty seconds." I was just saying that, if "Since I've Been Loving You" and "Gallows Pole" were tracks you skipped, you should give them a listen all the way through. You might find them to be surprisingly good. If you didn't skip over them, well cool. I'll shut up then.

I've just grown to skip most of the songs as the years have passed. I used to listen to the whole thing. And Gallows Pole is probably one of my top three songs on the album.

I like to tell people I haven't met before that I only listen to racist music and then when they get uncomfortable I say, "You know, like Led Zeppelin."

I don't actually do that, but I'm going to one of these days.

Glenn,

Yeah. I kind of went in the reverse. I use to skip songs, but now I end up listening to the whole song before making any kind of judgement. There are times when it's surprisingly rewarding. There are more times it's not, so I can see why you would want to skip songs.

PS--It's cool that Gallows Pole made one of your top three songs, anyway.

I remember when I was like, 10 years old my dad and I were out in the car coming home from some place (probably Publix or something) and he started telling me about Gallow's Pole. I'm not really sure why he felt compelled to describe a Zep song about being hanged to his 10 year old daughter, but I guess he was just enthusiastic about it or something. Anyway, so my dad tells me about the song, the lyrics, and how great it is. Then we went home and he played it for me. What the hell was that all about? Other kids got lectures about life, I got lectures about Zeppelin.
