A Month of Boring Things - Day Twenty-Four: Ramen

Ramen noodles are pretty much depressing. They're cheap and easy to prepare. You can give them to children for lunch because, whatever, they're children--what are they gonna do about it? College kids like them because college kids are lazy and don't know shit. I swore I'd never eat them again after I graduated. But I just had some. Which means I'm pretty much a failure.

A renal failure. Them shits have more sodium than a fucking salt mine.

You don't have to use all the packet-thing. And you can add an egg! Or scallions! Or lima beans! See Rattawut Lapcharoensap's essay in ALONE IN THE KITCHEN WITH AN EGGPLANT. Well, a lot of that's in there. The other stuff I got from a magazine. Wow, I care about ramen a lot more than I thought I did when I started typing this comment.

Loco, that's true. I'm guessing ramen can be used in conjunction with a lot of different things to make a nice little meal. But I think a lot of people like me (drunks who live alone) buy it so they don't have to cook.

One time, when we were in Korea, John and I had just gone to bed when there was a knock at the door. The door man had showed up with soju and ramen and made me cook it for him while calling me "sister" the whole time. He also told us "my wife is a Chinese man!"
Sometimes I miss that place!

Loco stole the words right out of my mouth. I always toss the seasoning packet of MSG death and season them with some soy sauce, sesame oil, and Sriracha. An egg or some frozen vegetables don't hurt either. Takes the same amount of time and makes you feel like less of a loser for eating ramen.

Soy sauce has more salt than the packet. True story.

Oh yeah--you can put ham on your ramen, like Ponyo.

How do you know that I don't use low salt soy sauce? Well I don't, but at least my soy sauce doesn't have MSG. Kikkoman!

I don't, but even low(er) salt soy sauce still has something like 600-800 mg of sodium per serving. I know. I like soy sauce.

God I love soy sauce.
