The Masque of Mandragora

After the TARDIS is drawn into the Mandragora Helix, some powerful helix energy follows the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith to 15th century Italy. The rogue energy finds its way to the Brethren of Demnos, a pagan cult conspiring in the catacombs under San Martino. Meanwhile, above ground, Count Frederico and Hieronymous, the court astrologer, plot against the young Duke Giuliano. The mounting forces threaten not only the lives of those in San Martino but humanity's ability to escape the Dark Ages. Much like The Time Warrior, The Masque of Mandragora does a good job of combining science fiction elements with the show's mostly abandoned historical format. The serial features great sets, costumes and exteriors. The acting is fairly good across the board, save for some palace guards with thick British accents. And there's lots of action for the Doctor. When he's not tossing out witty barbs, he's either stealing horses or sword fighting. The Masque of Mandragora, while not being a standout, is a solidly entertaining serial.
