Semi-Pro

I don't know, I guess I just wanted it to be possible to live in a world where the movie Semi-Pro starring Will Ferrell was funny. Sure, it probably couldn't have been and also wasn't, but wouldn't that have been great if it somehow pulled it off? The plot is it's the 1970s and Will Ferrell is the eccentric owner/announcer/coach/promoter/point guard on a struggling fictional ABA team, the Flint Tropics. The movie practically writes itself (bad thing).

RATING: 21%

  4. I hated Anchorman. Also, I brutally judge people who didn't.

  5. I thought it was kind of funny and would probably even rate it somewhere in the 60s. But then again, I've grown more accepting in my old age.

@IJ: I think Anchorman is hilarious and brutally judge people who don't. Diversity is a large wooden ship, my friend.

  7. I actually think Will Ferrell makes a much better straight man.

  8. Keep the dream alive, Glenn. Maybe one day we can all live in a world where Will Ferrell stars in a funny basketball movie. Until then, we'll all just have to settle for Talladega Nights being the only decent Will Ferrell sport spoof.

  9. The bear wrestling bit was funny, but that was really the high point of the movie. Sad.

  11. Wrestling a bear? Wow.

I am confused by Woody Harrelson's career choices... this movie... the Will Smith one about organ donation that I so loved... either he has given up completely or is some sort of career-plotting genius.

  12. I couldn't stand Talladega Nights, partly because the people who the movie was making fun of look at it as some kind of anthem for them (much like Randy Newman's song, "Rednecks"). Mostly, though, I just dind't think it was funny. I waited and waited for it to get funny, but I don't think I laughed once.

Semi-Pro looked like another case of the studio betting that "Random Sport + Will Ferrell = Hilarity". I doubted this formula.

I agree with Shoppista that he's much funnier in less "supposed to be funny" roles. Stranger Than Fiction was, to me, his best work. I liked Elf, too. Anchorman was a little disappointing, but still with enough funny and quotable bits to satisfy. It should have been much funnier than it was, given its premise, and most of what was funny it was not Will Ferrell.

  13. I liked Stranger Than Fiction too. Winter's Passing was kind of pretentious but Will Ferrell was good in it as well.

I didn't like him much on SNL. Those cheerleading bits might be my least favourite sketches of all time.
