JD Salinger

“I hope to hell that when I do die somebody has the sense to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetary. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody.”

So long, JD Salinger. You pretty much kicked ass.

  2. I don't want to speak ill of the dead or anything, but I really disliked Catcher in the Rye. But then again, I was never a whiny ass rich kid.

  3. The people I know who name The Catcher in the Rye as their favorite book are all either borderline sociopaths or people who generally dislike reading.

I guess a book that gets non-readers reading is mostly a good thing, but IMO Catcher is overrated.

I'm going to have to go ahead and say that's some of the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

  8. Atta boy. I think Glenn and Loco will agree: your transition to A.N. is infinitely hilariouslyer.

  9. oh wow, aimee. hi.
i thought i hadn't read jdsal because i hadn't read catcher but then i remembered that i read Franny & Zoey for Psych 101. And also Goodbye Columbus by Philip Roth. That was a weird class. My professor had been a psych professor already during the Kennedy administration.

  11. How many of y'all walk around passing out copies of J.D.'s books to your friends? I doubt any of you do. Personally, I pass out copies of “Stranger in a Strange Land” and “The Moon is a Harsh Mistress” by the dean, Robert A. Heinlein, to anyone who wants to read something that actually kicks ass and will blow them away. As for what morons consider “mainstream” fiction, I find the works of Sinclair Lewis (“Babbit”), and Theodore Dreiser (“Sister Carrie”) to be better than those of J.D.’s and Harper’s that so many crow on and on about.

Half-Price Books (located in seveeral states, including Texas) are awesome around Thanksgiving and Christmas when they have an extra 20% off discount. Hard copies, and even tape/cd versions, make great gifts.

  12. My friends are busy chasing a suburban psychological mirage called "literary merit." They only read books by Creative Writers.

Hey, if you like SF you should check out Tony Daniel's stuff. His story Life on the Moon was nominated for a Hugo and won the Asimov reader's poll. A Dry, Quiet War's good too. He's my boss and friend. Apologies if I've plugged his stuff within earshot before.

  13. jdsal is sci fi (or, er... science fiction)? franny and zooey seemed pretty straight-up psychological realism, from what i remember. it was like two sisters jealous of each other, comparing the size of their labia or something. and i always thought catcher in the rye was like stoner-style deep thoughts, like "how do i know if my hand is a hand or if it's just what i believe is a hand."

  15. You people are delirious. Salinger's work is some of the best post-WWII fiction I've read--especially Nine Stories. If his characters are whiny, well, so are rich Americans. The guy was a fantastic writer.

  16. Oh, Aimee Nebekenezer. How I love you so. Hey, I hear we're both gonna be doing some time in the joint in Denver this April. Maybe we can trade shank-creation methods.

  17. @loco: Lol! My first love was right out of Salinger...as we are sitting in a tree we climbed at three in the morning..."no one will see us, no one ever looks up." What a loser.

  18. Ohhhh, wait. I get it. You're all anti-Semites.

  19. I'm not sure. Was Paul Zindel a Jew?

    ReplyDelete
  20. I think so. But Zindel is a tricky one, one of those switch-hitter surnames. Like Wolf/Wolff/Wolfe, and Miller/Miller. And this guy.

  21. I like Glenn, who is technically part semite, but I dislike Naomi Wolf, who's Jewish. I guess I'll have to flip a coin.

  23. No way, I love Jews. I get a lot of holidays because of them. Also, matzo ball soup is delicious.
