Hegemony

Hegemony is when, in a multicultural society, one culture (be it social, racial, economic, or idealogical) stays in power by an elaborate system of dominance that includes pop culture, ignorance, and armchair Marxism. It comes from a Greek term meaning, "Madness? This is SPARTA!"

Damn. For years, I just thought it was a word Orson Scott Card liked to bandy around.

I had a history professor in college who framed his class around the notion of hegemony. I really liked him because once he made a passing reference to the Buzzcocks. I don't know what they have to do with hegemony, but I bet something. No one else liked him. He had a beard. This was in College Station. His tests were ridiculously hard, too. They were multiple choice and short answer, but the thing is--here's where it gets tricky--all the answers (to the multiple choice section) were correct; he wanted us to choose the most correct.
Also, I saw him once driving a beatup Toyota around town. His wife was Asian, I think. This has since shaped my view of the inner-lives of academics: short white guys with beards who used to like the Buzzcocks and drive old imports and marry Asian ladies.
All of this is true, by the way.

Possible Buzzcocks connection, VA: Pete Shelley = openly bisexual. Probable sex/gender norm hegemony. Or not.

Heteronormativity = hegemony

NOT bi-sexuality

That must be one of them "organic intellectuals" Gramsci was always on about. They truly are the snow leopards of the critical world.

um... doesn't heteronormative hegemony exclude bisexuality, at least in dudes? I think we're saying the same thing in two different ways.
